The United States of Tasers

Wow, I saw this news today: Hearing Impaired Man Tased by Police. I don’t understand the part where the police officer says, “This one occurred on the worst of calls, that being a shooting. The first few minutes getting control of the scene are very, very important.”

I’m always hearing about people dying and being injured from being tased. But, I don’t understand why there is a need for tasering. How did the police get “control of the scene” before tasers were invented? And they seem to be quite liberal in using these weapons of lethal force. You don’t hear about them shooting people by mistake as much.

Just a side note, I’ve never seen a police officer use a taser in Japan. In fact, I’m pretty sure they don’t have them. I think in the over 4 years I’ve been in Japan, there has only been one case where an officer had to use his gun. And I’m pretty sure Japan doesn’t support torture either…
